Beyond the Classroom - Fund EGHI Field Scholars

Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI) Field Scholars

Emory Global Health Institute trains and supports the next generation of global health leaders. Field Scholarships are granted each year to Emory students with several key objectives:

  • Reinforcing result-driven global health research
  • Cultivating collaboration with in-country partner organizations
  • Developing strong leaders
  • Providing opportunities for hands-on experience in another country

Each multidisciplinary student team represents three different Emory schools (e.g., Public Health, the College of Arts and Sciences, Law, Nursing, etc.) and has the opportunity to partner with a university student from the host country. Cultivating cross-culture interdisciplinary collaboration now strengthens successful global health impact for the future.

In addition to field research, this fund also supports the annual Global Health Student Photography Contest. This contest fosters cultural sensitivity by encouraging students to examine the culture and people with whom they are working and to document a global health, public health, or health care issue in a creative, thought-provoking and respectful way.

Why Your Support Matters

Your support of the Global Health Photo Contest and Field Scholars Fund will directly support the work of student scholars, who in turn lead innovative projects in partnership with local organizations across the world. Your gift fuels our mission and brings greater focus to global health issues.

$25 can support one hour of real-world global health experience. Field scholars are:

  • Investigating implications of wildlife on human diarrheal disease in Madagascar
  • Developing ambulance provider courses in Tanzania
  • Evaluating infant feeding toolkits in Malawi

As an EGHI donor, you become an agent of change for good.

The Stories Behind the Photos

Left: “The Best Medicine" by Dr. Lucas Philipp, 18M 18PH. The need for urological interventions in the Central Plateau of Haiti is great, and many serious problems go untreated for a lifetime. Between the anesthesia, the lengthy surgery, and the constant struggle of never quite overcoming the language barrier, this young man had every reason in the world to be upset… but, whatever Haiti lacks in medical resources, you’ll find that there is no shortage of smiles and laughter.

Right: “VaxTrac Hard at Work” by Mark Thomas 16B 16PH. A Nepali health worker uses the VaxTrac system to identify the child and access her vaccine history.

Top of page: “Amazonian Stars” by Charles Acharya-Harless, 17PH, 2016 Global Health Student Photography Contest award winning photo. A malaria research hut exudes light as the Milky Way shines beautifully in the clear Amazonian night sky. A small electrical generator powers a simple light microscope used to diagnose malaria strains and a single standard headlamp within the hut.
