Mobilizing the Quest for Cancer Information

Emory College of Arts and Sciences

Mission

Many patients diagnosed with cancer search online for information. Much of the available content is difficult to understand and sometimes misleading. CancerQuest, based at Emory University, is an online resource that offers fully referenced, evidence-based information but does so in a way that is easily understandable. Our goal is to redesign our website to be more interactive and mobile friendly.

“If we can create a more mobile-friendly platform for CancerQuest, then we’ll be able to make the information on the website more accessible to everyone.”   —Biology student Chloe Donegan 14OX 16C

What we do

CancerQuest is an educational project that began in 1998 in response to a family member’s breast cancer diagnosis. The purpose of the site is to help save lives by empowering cancer patients, their caregivers, and the general public with reliable, easy-to-understand information about the biology and treatment of cancer.

At the center of CancerQuest is our website. From the beginning, the website was designed to provide both background information and descriptions of cutting-edge treatments. The site is rich with animations, videos, and interactive components to engage and educate patients and their families.

“CancerQuest provides reliable information in a format that patients and their loved ones can understand.” Dr. David H. Lawson 74M 79FM | Winship Cancer Institute

Example of mobile responsive design

A mobile-friendly website is one that has been designed, developed, and optimized so that each user, no matter which mobile device they are using, gets the best experience possible.

Who do we help?

CancerQuest’s public health impact is global. Much of the information on the site is available in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. We have active collaborations with partner universities in Mexico, China, and Taiwan. In Mexico, a student organization at the Querétaro campus developed in collaboration with CancerQuest is now educating their community by using the Spanish resources available on our website.

In the past year, our website has received more than 1.8 million visits from 229 countries/territories across the world. CancerQuest also connects with users through our Facebook pages, which are available in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean. Our U.S. Facebook page has more than 400,000 followers.

"I believe that CancerQuest is important to patients and their families because it provides reliable easy-to-understand information."  —Julie Whitehead, patient

Why your support matters?

Our website isn’t mobile friendly, which means that users visiting on their mobile devices are unable to take full advantage of the site’s content. Currently more than half of all Google searches are performed on mobile devices, and that percentage continues to increase. About 1 in 5 people use mobile devices as their primary access to the Internet, and about 7 percent use ONLY mobile devices to access the Internet. In the past year, 62% of smartphone owners have used their phone to look up information about a health condition.*

With your support, our goal is to create a newly designed, mobile-friendly website, placing the health information on CancerQuest at the fingertips of millions of people around the world. Please help us reach our goal so we can empower more cancer patients and their loved ones.
