Get on the Bus | Help Children Visit the Carlos Museum

Our Campaign Mission

Our campaign mission is to provide children the opportunity to visit the Michael C. Carlos Museum. Our $5,000 goal will help to cover bus transportation and offset museum admission fees for underserved K-12 students in the metropolitan Atlanta area. We believe that all children should have the chance to learn about world cultures and history through works of art.

What we do

The Carlos Museum tours approximately 20,000 students per year through its collections of Near Eastern, Greek and Roman, South Asian, Ancient American, 19th and 20th sub-Saharan African, and ancient Egyptian art. The economic crisis of 2008 resulted in a sharp decline in the number of underserved students who were able to visit the museum. In many school systems, learning experiences that take place outside of the classroom are seen as nonessential and are often the first items to be cut.

“We want every child to have the opportunity to visit regardless of their resources. Carlos Museum school tours expand the classroom experience and the imaginations of visiting students.” —Elizabeth Hornor Carlos Museum Ingram Director of Education

Docent-led school tours at the Carlos Museum engage students' natural sense of wonder as history, archaeology, science, mythology, religion, and art come alive in the galleries. Costumes, unique props, and digital interpretation make the experience interactive. Tours of the collections are designed to meet Common Core and Georgia Performance standards in many areas of the curriculum, providing a vivid entry to the study of world cultures. Teachers may request tours of the museum's special exhibitions, specific areas of the permanent collection, or curriculum-based theme tours.

Keep the bus wheels turning: Why your support matters

The Carlos Museum began to offer a bus stipend to underserved schools after learning from teachers that the biggest impediment to school field trips is the cost of transportation. Every donation made in support of this project will help to provide bus transportation and offset admission fees.

The Carlos Museum has committed up to $10,000 annually in transportation stipends or admission assistance to provide more students the opportunity to visit each year. Generous donors have already helped provide half of this amount, and now we need your help to raise an additional $5,000. These funds will help cover the costs of 20 additional buses or provide admission assistance for 800 students! We could even create the opportunity for an entire grade level of up to 100 students, which requires four buses, to experience the Carlos Museum together.

Help us reach our goal so we can provide school children the opportunity to learn about world cultures and history through works of art.

Students visiting the Carlos Museum

"I want to thank you for helping our elementary school visit the Carlos Museum in September. The students would not have been able to attend without the reduced fee and transportation assistance. Students are making connections between new information and a variety of subjects such as social studies, language arts, and math. Our field trip to the Carlos Museum was the catalyst for this year-long educational journey into the ancient world!” —Gwinnett County elementary school art teacher
