Uncover Buried Truths by Helping Solve Civil Rights Cold Cases
As chronicled in the award-winning “Buried Truths” podcast, winner of the Peabody and Robert F. Kennedy Awards, the Cold Cases Project shines the light of justice where there was none. According to Hank Klibanoff, director and teacher of the Georgia Civil Rights Cold Cases Project at Emory University, “The purpose of the course and the project is not simply to solve a crime, name perpetrators, and push for prosecution. Our purpose is to teach our students how to locate, dig out and analyze the documentation of those crimes, then engage them in understanding the difficult and fascinating—and, for many families, enduring—history of the life and times of these victims."
In the process of uncovering secrets, solving mysteries, and finding the truth, students produce answers for families of victims who have long despaired. By presenting accounts of these findings through a public platform that closes gaps in history, the project brings reconciliation, closure, and peace for families of victims whose claim to justice has long been denied.
