Emory Remote Area Medical (RAM) was started as a response to tackle the severe shortage of healthcare facilities in remote areas locally. Our mission is to prevent pain and alleviate suffering by providing free, quality healthcare to those in need. With over 10% of Georgians lacking health insurance and only 47 short-term rural hospitals able to provide care for the 1,800,000+ rural residents in Georgia, the rural healthcare system is both overburdened and underfunded. Thus, we aim to establish another RAM clinic in Georgia. With this upcoming clinic in the spring of 2023, Emory RAM aims to treat 600 patients and provide over $200,000 worth of medical treatments at no cost to the patients.
Emory RAM, a student-led chapter of the national RAM organization, has already hosted one of the first RAM clinics in the state of Georgia and has provided rural Georgians with quality dental, vision, and health care. Services at our next clinic will include dentistry work such as extractions, fillings and repairs, eye exams, distribution of glasses to those who demonstrate need, educational pamphlets and programs focused on healthy living, and routine checkups. In addition, breast exams, diabetes screenings, physicals, and other preventive health interventions will be available for patients.
This past September, Emory RAM served 281 patients and provided $122,210 worth of free healthcare. With this upcoming clinic, Emory RAM aims to treat approximately 400 patients and provide over $200,000 worth of medical treatments at no cost to the patients. RAM clinics over the last year have collectively provided treatment to 45,000 patients and have provided 15 million dollars of medical treatments. Healthcare professionals and volunteers will be recruited to serve these patients and provide necessary care. Machinery such as x-ray machines, optometry phoropters, and dental equipment will be provided by the national RAM organization to increase the depth at which attendees can be evaluated for health issues. We recognize the importance of sustained medical attention to drive lasting health changes in communities. Thus, follow-up care will be provided for the patients, which includes but is not limited to physical examinations, imaging tests, blood tests, and pap smears. Through the provision of follow-up care, we can work towards a healthier future for these often-ignored communities as we connect residents with long-term care through the recruitment of healthcare providers and services.
