Thank you for your interest the in 2023 Emory DPT Service Learning Trip to Jamaica. This campaign has ended, but you can still support future DPT service trips to Jamaica by making a gift here, today!
This spring, 21 students, faculty, and neurological residents in Emory’s Doctor of Physical Therapy Program will travel to St. Elizabeth Parish in rural Jamaica to provide necessary physical therapy services to individuals with neurologic injuries. By partnering with a local community organization, Friends of the Redeemer United (ForU) Rehabilitation Center, the students will be paired with a local Jamaican who seeks the opportunity to improve their physical function and quality of life through this five-day intensive program. The rehabilitation services the students will provide include tailored gait and balance training, strengthening, activity modification, home assessments, community reintegration, and patient and family education.
Neurological conditions such as stroke, spinal cord injury, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis have a significant impact on chronic disability and quality of life. Physical therapy services work within these populations to mitigate the long-term and debilitating effects that neurological conditions can have on individuals and their families. The geographic area we aim to serve, St. Elizabeth Parish, is more than two hours from the nearest rehabilitation hospital by car, making critical physical therapy services inaccessible for many who need them. Our partner clinic, ForU, helps meet this need by offering low-cost rehabilitation services to members of St. Elizabeth Parish.
You can help improve the quality of life for those living with neurological conditions by supporting our annual service-learning trip where we fulfill ForU clinic’s mission to provide vital health services to this underserved community.
Your crucial gift will be used by our rehabilitation team to implement our intensive 5-day long neuro clinic for the underserved population of St. Elizabeth Parish. Your donation will be used towards the purchase of treatment supplies, durable medical equipment, sustainable home modifications, and trip-related costs for our team. When paired with physical therapy services, this equipment can make a lasting impact on the patients we serve, as well as their families, friends, and community.
Your gift of $10 can help cover the cost of our annual camp T-shirt for each participant
Your gift of $25 can help cover the cost of therapy and treatment supplies (Therabands, cones, tape, padding for wheelchairs) for the clinic and patients to use at home
Your gift of $50 can help cover the costs of durable medical equipment such as a walker, cane, crutches, or brace for patients to take home
Your gift of $100 can help cover the cost of lodging for one DPT student for the entire week
Your gift of $200 can help cover the cost of a customized wheelchair and cushions for the patient
