Thank you for your interest in this Emory Helpline Momentum project. Even though this campaign has ended, you can still support Helpline by making a gift here, today!
The Emory Helpline began in 1979 with 10 volunteers and $200 – a collaboration between graduate students and faculty in the university’s Department of Psychology.
Today, the Helpline responds to up to 100 calls a year, supplementing the work of CAPS by providing paraprofessional support for students after regular office hours. Our volunteers also advocate for the Emory community’s mental health concerns, counteract stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, and promote student flourishing.
Before joining “the Line,” volunteers go through a rigorous application and interview process, as well as an extensive 40-hour-plus training program. After joining, Helpline volunteers receive additional education on a regular basis, as well as weekly supervision and ongoing support from their staff advisor, Dr. Irene Daboin Dominguez, licensed psychologist and suicide prevention coordinator for CAPS.
However, the dedicated and demanding work of our Helpline volunteers is not publicly recognized or even known to the Emory community because their roles require them to remain anonymous. The anonymity of both callers and volunteers is an integral aspect of how the Helpline operates, so it is accurate to say that our volunteers are dedicated to supporting Emory in a way that truly embodies selfless service to others.
The Helpline has historically received funding through two sources: College Council and the annual Bare Naked Voices Concert. As of spring 2021, the concert series has been permanently canceled. For this reason, we are reaching out to ask for your support in continuing our mission.
Specifically, your donations will help cover some of our operational expenses, including marketing and promotional materials, training materials, and other training costs.
Please consider donating $44 dollars to commemorate the Line’s 44 years – or whatever you are able to give at this time. We appreciate donations in any amount.
