Support the Allison Rose Advocacy Award

The Neonatology Division at Emory’s School of Medicine invites you to contribute to the Allison Rose Advocacy Award Fund in memory of Dr. Allison Thomas Rose.

The Allison Rose Advocacy Award will encourage pediatric trainees to engage in effective advocacy, to provide a mechanism to fund trainee projects, and to enhance training in advocacy at Emory University and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. This award will support an advocacy project related to maternal or child health led by a pediatric trainee. Medical residents and fellows at the Emory Department of Pediatrics will be eligible to request up to $5,000 through this award.

Legacy of Dr. Allison Thomas Rose

Dr. Allison Thomas Rose joined the Division of Neonatology in 2020 after completing her MD, residency training (including a fourth year as Chief Resident) in Pediatrics, and fellowship training in Neonatology at Emory University. As a Neonatology Fellow, she focused her research and advocacy efforts on necrotizing enterocolitis and completed the Emory Health Equity, Advocacy, & Policy track. As a Junior Faculty member, she quickly established herself as the advocacy champion, focusing on provision of donor human milk for high-risk infants including those most at risk of necrotizing enterocolitis. As a result of her collaboration with the Georgia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), nearly $500,000/year was allocated to the Georgia fiscal budget for Medicaid coverage of donor human milk for inpatient use in premature infants. It is hard to quantify the impact that these advocacy efforts have had on countless babies and their families in our state. Her expertise in this area earned her national recognition including presentations with the AAP Oncall Podcast, the AAP Women in Neonatology webinar series on advocacy, and the Incubator Podcast in addition to peer-reviewed publications in Pediatrics and the Journal of Perinatology related to her advocacy and research efforts surrounding necrotizing enterocolitis and Medicaid coverage for the provision of donor human milk. In 2022, Dr. Rose was awarded the GA AAP Young Physician Award.

Dr. Rose also served as a member of the Neonatal Committee for the Georgia Perinatal Quality Collaborative and worked on the Optimizing Newborn Nutrition in Georgia project aimed to improve human milk feedings for newborns. She served as the Associate Medical Director for the NICU at Grady Memorial Hospital, Atlanta’s safety-net hospital for its most at-risk population. At Grady, she was an outstanding educator of fellows, residents, medical students, and staff on the importance of advocacy on the level of the patient, the institution, the state, and beyond. Countless trainees learned from the advocacy efforts of Dr. Rose. She also served as the neonatal coordinator for Grady in its role as the regional perinatal center for northern Georgia. In her research and service career, Dr. Rose consistently demonstrated her strong commitment to improving neonatal health with a focus on health advocacy and breastfeeding outcomes. In her clinical career, she was also a fierce advocate for her patients and their families, always going above and beyond to meet their needs and provide the best possible outcomes while equipping families with education to become the ultimate advocate for their children.
