We are launching an elective called FM-RISE (Family Medicine Residency International Scholarship Experience). This elective provides residents with the opportunity to participate in a vetted, interdisciplinary, community-focused medical expedition in a region facing critical shortages in medical personnel, especially in rural areas. Through clinical care, public health education, and community development initiatives, residents will strengthen clinical competencies, cultural humility, and public health awareness. The need is great in many rural communities, both in Georgia and abroad, where access to healthcare is limited. Our goal is to both provide treatment in areas where health access is low and health burden is high, as well as to empower individuals in these regions to gain agency over their health. Through offering health screenings, educating patients on preventative care, and teaching chronic disease management, our mission is clear: to improve lives and create lasting change in the perspectives of new physicians.

The first FM-RISE scholars will participate in a service trip to Huehuetenango, Guatemala. Carolina Huertas Ayala, MD and Luis Enrique Roman MD will be traveling with a team from Emory ED as part of a health brigade called “Emory Helps Guatemala”, where our collective Emory team will provide essential medical care, health education, and resources to underserved populations in this region.

Due to a significant budget cuts to our CME budget and an indefinite freeze for all travel, we now need to raise funds to cover the costs of travel, medical supplies, and outreach efforts for up to 2 residents annually.
