About the Daniel Desevo ’97 Scholarship Endowment

When Daniel DeSevo 97C was a student at Emory University, he had no idea his time on this earth would be cut short by a devastating battle with leukemia. Yet Daniel lived every day like it could be his last, packing more adventure, bravado, success, compassion, love, and friendship into his 24 years on this planet than some do in 100 years.

Daniel was a leader. He was a star student, president of Alpha Epsilon Pi, and world traveler who visited 20 different countries. We all have a friend like Daniel in our lives, a self-sacrificing trailblazer who is destined for great achievements in the realm of business and community.

The purpose of the Daniel DeSevo ’97 Scholarship Endowment is to support those leaders.

Why your support matters

For many of us, 2017 marks our 20-year reunion from Emory University. A time that is bitter-sweet as so many of us wish we could have shared this milestone with our friend, Daniel DeSevo. We likely would have toasted Daniel’s many accomplishments. We would have shared food and fellowship with one of the brightest spirits in our graduating class. We would, if only we could. While Daniel cannot physically join us at the reunion, he stays with us always. His legacy lives on through us and through our kindness to others which is Daniel’s legacy.

We give today to honor Daniel’s legacy and to support the DeSevo scholars of tomorrow. The need for scholarship funding remains the highest priority at Emory University. We are now close to seeing the Daniel DeSevo ‘97 Memorial Scholarship Endowment reach the milestone of $400,000. In order to properly steward an endowment to exist in perpetuity, the university awards only a portion of annual earnings and reinvests additional earnings to help grow the endowment over time. Currently, the Daniel DeSevo ‘97 Memorial Scholarship Endowment supports two students per year, one junior and one senior, with an award of more than $7,500 each. You can help fuel our ability to offer a scholarship of $10,000 to each student.

Who benefits from the DeSevo Scholarship?

Since the scholarship was first awarded in 2009, there have been six recipients. Two additional beneficiaries will be named this September.

 Past scholarship recipients include:

  • Michael Furlong 13B — A former New York bond trader turned entrepreneur who founded StratiFi, a financial technology company based out of San Francisco
  • Hyde Kwan 14B — International business analyst at PTT Global Chemical in Bangkok, Thailand
  • David Ehrlich 17B — Graduated May 2017 and completed summer internship as an analyst at Wells Fargo Securities in New York City

You’ll hear more from our DeSevo Scholarship recipients as we move forward toward our goal. We hope these students will inspire your continued support of Daniel’s legacy through this memorial scholarship.

Give today to support tomorrow’s courageous leaders. Together, we can uphold Daniel’s legacy as well as honor the Emory students who embody that legacy today.
